Marc Jacobs and Spring Captured in NYC

My resolution for spring is to take more photos, even with my iPhone. I live in one of the most exciting cities in the world, in one of the most exciting neighborhoods–the East Village, where my parents grew up, met on the night the Beatles landed at JFK, and fell in love in Little Ukraine where Veselka, the 24-hour Ukrainian diner on Second Avenue, still stands.

Walking down a single block of 5th street, there is so much to capture, like this graffiti that sums up the spirit of spring and what it takes to audaciously thrive in a mean town:

Have you ever seen a more beautiful banana seat bike? There’s something so innocent and naive about it’s simple U-lock in a city of screaming car-alarms.

Just below the bike, evidence that we’ve made it through another winter:

Then there’s this beautiful building; it’s like a Gwen Stefani-inspired wedding cake:

Turning the corner onto the Bowery, oh, what’s this? Marc Jacobs! The springtime of fashion himself! Here we are; don’t mind my Sunday best:

Marc was incredibly warm and sweet to pose with me when I was in a rare photog mood. I didn’t realize until later that I had my big stupid Gucci bag with me. I’m a Jacobs fan-through-and-through, a love sprung from his appreciation of ready-to-wear, happy colors, as well as: his camel toe holiday party costume, introducing me to BryanBoy.com in this story I wrote for Conde Nast Portfolio on influential bloggers, the way he stood up for himself (without question) when some fashion editor quipped about his shows starting late (“I work my ass off. I don’t take vacations. I don’t have homes all over the world. I don’t ride horses: I [bleeping] work for a living. Again, like this idea, you have a family? OK, well that’s nice, I don’t, and I work. So leave me alone and don’t come to the show next time.”) Love it. One should always stand up for oneself – New York will teach you that.

And what’s hotter than spring? Summer:

Happy Seasons Change! And Congratulations to Us All (Even Those Who Don’t Deserve It) That We Are on Our Way to Passing Health Care Reform! Now that I’ll be saving money, I’m going to buy myself a Jacobs bag – the Gucci, like winter, has run its course.
