Lorne Michaels: SNL’s Egalitarian Creative Process

One of my favorite points that Lorne Michaels, the creator/exec-producer of SNL, made last week at the Emmy-sponsored panel on SNL, featuring the show’s stars and producers, is that a comedy workplace is egalitarian. Maybe every creative workplace should be? And… that comedy is all about taking on the big elephant in the room. Shouldn’t any content producer? As Paul Steiger, founder of a new investigative news site, ProPublica, said on ProPublica reporter Sheri Fink’s Pulitzer win last week (Yes, they just started and already won a Pulitzer and was nominated for another):

ProPublica was founded to […] shine light on possible abuses of power or failures to uphold the public interest, so that the public can learn from and remedy them.

SNL does that too while making us laugh. For more insight into Lorne Michaels–the inspiration for both Dr. Evil and Jack Donaghy of “30 Rock”–go here to my latest post on the Huffington Post.
